Employers and recruiters receive a high volume or resumes everyday - to show you're perfect for the role and get an interview, you'll need to demonstrate personality and confidence!

 

When you find an amazing job opportunity you'd like to apply for, don't copy and paste your last application immediately. Take some time to prepare and plan your application, do some home work on the company or facility. 

 

Read the application carefully to ensure you address all of the required criteria and  meet the qualifications. Let the employer know you mean business: You'll make a great first impression if you do your research - Study the job description so that you can refer back to the specific skills and qualities that the employer is looking for as you complete your application.

 

Don’t make it hard work for the employer, provide them with all the information they have requested, plus additional links should they wish to learn more about you. 

 

What to include on an application form?

 

The application should make the employer want to contact you, learn more about you both personally and professionally.  

 

Typical sections of an application form include:

 

  • Personal information - Provide your name, email and contact number. 

  • Educational background - Provide information on your academic achievements, courses taken and qualifications gained.

  • Work experience - list your employment history and describe your main duties and responsibilities in each role, emphasising those most closely related to the job you're applying for.

  • Competency-based questions - give specific examples of times when you've demonstrated the skills required for the role. Don’t list anything irrelevant, refer back to the job description and highlight your strengths. 

  • Personal statement - write a well-structured, well-argued case that you are a strong candidate for the job, again referring to the job description. 

 

Ensure you include a cover letter, this is your first opportunity to grab the reviewers attention. Keep it short but informative, don't be afraid to sell yourself (honestly). Demonstrate your passion for the the role and any past achievements you can relate to the role. Always consider the employer and what specific skills and attributes they are searching for.  

 

 

Application Advice

 

  • Grab the employers attention, less is more and highlight key information. 

  • Try to make a connection with the reviewer, start building the relationship. 

  • A 2 page resume is sufficient with links to a portfolio, website, or LinkedIn profile should the employer wish to know more. 

  • Avoid masses of block text, or wasted space. Employers generally only spend 1-2 minutes initially reading an application. 

  • Don’t repeat information, it switches the reviewer off. 

  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, travel for an interview if needed to show your commitment. 

  • And if your serious about the job, you’ll spend the time to write a bespoke application, this will be appreciated and noticed by the reviewer.
